mail(a)mariannenoer.com+ 45 50942810

Located in Holstebro (Denmark)

ABOUT
Marianne Noer (1992) works with intangible cultural heritage with a focus on rural stories and craft.
Noer’s work is often based on a site-specific narrative, reflecting on the drastic changes in weather conditions, the loss of species and traditional crafts. This she often investigates with old textile techniques like the shaft loom, a tool with a long history to create stories (tapestries). Inspired by the windswept west coast to the flat heathland, she predominantly works in the landscape of western Jutland.

KH-Prisen
Fårene Fra Præstbjerg(The sheep from Præstbjerg)

With focus on craftsmanship and materials derived directly from the landscape. The art pieces were to tell stories about where to gather materials and how skilled craftspeople can transform a material by going into dialogue with its properties.Working with shepherds and the local sheep wool which were handspun (plant dyed) by artist into yarns and made into rope with ropemaker. Numbers from the sheep ears are engraved in the back to give a nod to the animals who grew the wool in a year's cyclus in the heather landscape at Præstbjerg in western Jutland.
Thank you to the Danish arts foundation (Craft and Design) Anni Nørskov Mørch, Anders V. Munch, Chris L. Halstrøm, Mette Mikkelsen and Nicolai Appel for the honour to create the KH-pris (award) 2024. Received by ceramicist Anne Black and Kasper Würtz

Forårsudstilligen, Charlottenborg
“The Spring Exhibition acts as a gauge for the current state of contemporary art, reflecting the most recent trends within the art world. Featuring works ranging from painting and sculpture to video installations and performance art, the show offers ample opportunity to explore and gain insight into the rich diversity of the contemporary art scene.

Ever since 1857, the Spring Exhibition has presented art, architecture, design and applied art, giving a wide range of artists the opportunity to exhibit their works to the general public.”

Jury Statement:
“ A poetic, tender power pervades the collection of works that have jointly become the 2024 Spring Exhibition. More or less visible threads connect the various works, including a preoccupation with the intimate, the vulnerable and the untold. Several of the contributions evince an interest in origins, in time, and express a yearning to dwell on narratives, ways of living and events that propose other, less frenetic paces as alternatives to the present-day rush of acceleration. Many works activate materials and structures from childhood or the past to renegotiate personal histories as well as the wider, so-called ‘common’ history.”

My Grandad Caught Eel

Childhood memories related to familie ties to the fjord and fishing. In a time of loose of species and live in the danish fjords.

Outtake from writing exhibited with the woven works:

”It is by the fjord on the small Limefjord island, Jegindø. Where the old fishing hut still stands a stone’s throw from the water. The place where my grandfather Jens taught my father to clean eels. A grandfather who died before I was born. My father passed the craft on to me in my childhood. How to skin and clean the eels we caught, with my hands and a short sharp knife.

A knowledge that is put on hold. Because the European eel is rare (endangered). The fjord is no longer a good habitat for it. Together with the absence of other species, it seems so quiet today under the water’s surface. Except for the new species that have found their way to the deserted sandy bottoms. Enclaves of voluminous Pacific oysters live close to the shoreline, many times larger than the flat Limfjord oysters they have displaced.”

Description of Experience - Skinning an Eel

Written 2013 - Marianne Noer

The eel moves when I place it on the Chopping board and holding it firmly while I cut off the head. I cut from just behind the ear. I don’t cut all the way through, but leave a small bit of the skin attached to the body. So that the meat is cut through, but a bit of the eel skin is attached. I use this to remove the skin from the fish. I strongly but still carefully pull the skin downwards so that it slowly slides off and the wrong side of the skin is visible. The eel’s nerves are still working and it wriggles. Sometimes the skin breaks at the bottom where the tail becomes thin and flattens out a little. But then I cut some of the skin off the body. Then I can pull it off completely.

The eel must be cleaned and this is done by cutting open the belly along the stomach and small intestines and entrails can be scraped out with the knife. The eel is completely light in flesh and almost transparent/marble.

The skin is first very dark on the outside and can appear bluish and brownish.

Inside: the leather shades from white mother-of-pearl to a light aqua blue and light flesh color. The surface is shiny.

Tidsel feber : Group exhibition

Thistle Fever. With the works Fabrication and Control

“The "Corridor of Thistles" is a plant art project that lets you explore a green pathway to the sea surrounded by beautiful thistles, buzzing insects and wildflowers. The pathway opens to reveal panoramic views with Røsnes in the horizon to the east.
When the first plan for highway corridors crossing Samsø was published, the impact on our landscape, nature and culture became both very visual and terrifyingly concrete! (...)
The thistle has been the symbol of resistance and defense before. The Scotts were said to be warned from approaching enemies when unaware barefoot Vikings stepped on Scotland's now national flower, the thistle. Thistles are controversial. Farmers struggle to keep them out of their fields and they are not easy to love even as we are rewilding our gardens.” - from the art collective and curators of the exhibition https://www.tidselkorridoren.dk

	CONSTRUCTION OF A WOVEN OBJECT

Investigation of how to fabricate a 3-dimensional sculptural object directly in one process on an analogue weaving loom.
To explore how to weave a standing structure. Through an examination of the double-weaving technique unfolds the study of how objects can be created directly on the loom. The technique is based on two separate layers of horizontal threads in copper installed on the loom. By weaving one meter longer in the top layer and then weave it together with the bottom layer a long flotation is created. This is repeated three times and forms the objects body. When the weaving is taken off the loom, the object is unfolded. Thus, in one coherent procedure surface and shape is created. An exploration of the interaction between loom, technique, material and weaver.

	Where Are All The Sheep
In a local collaboration with Lystbækgaaard in Ulfborg the project investigates the historic context and properties (aesthetic and functional) of the wool. The process leads from participating in the shearing/sorting process to local wool spinners who handspun yarn, which were then made into ropes with rope maker Steen Franch to revitalize an old tradition of making tactile soft rope from sheep wool.
